Samantha Tan Racing was encouraged by season-long Championship-leading pace.
By: Samantha Tan Racing
October 9, 2024

Samantha Tan Racing brought a resolute season in GT World Challenge America to a close at the Indianapolis 8 Hour with proven class-leading pace and an eventual top five in-class.

ST Racing was among the early contenders for victory in both the PRO class (renamed ‘FGTWCA PRO’ for Indianapolis, with GTWC America competitors sharing an enlarged grid with their Intercontinental GT Open contemporaries) and PRO/AM in the early going, thanks to the blistering pace of its dual BMW M4 GT3s. Regrettably, recurring technical gremlins ended up stymying the Canadian team’s chances, though its mechanics and drivers worked bullishly together to get both cars to the chequered flag at Indy’s only night race of the year.

While disappointed by the circumstances at Indianapolis, team co-owners Samantha and Kenneth Tan are nevertheless proud of the marked progress made by ST Racing across a hard-fought GTWC America campaign in 2024. One that produced three class wins and 11 further podium finishes across seven rounds, and saw the Canadian team lead the PRO/AM Teams’ standings for the majority of the season.

Samantha Tan, team co-owner / driver (#38): “This one really hurt. I started the race, P6 in class. After a very strong start, I was running P2 in class before mechanical issues forced us into the garage for over half an hour. We were able to get the car back out but the same issue occurred again and we were back in the garage. We needed to pass one car to win the championship but we were over 20 laps down. We pushed until the end, but finished one position short. Ultimately, the mechanical issues took us out of contention for the race and the championship. We lost by 1 singular point. We gave it our all and it was one hell of a season. I know we can keep our heads high, but… my heart is truly in pieces right now. That’s just racing though. It was an honour to race with Neil and JCD this season — to learn with and from them. We’ll keep pushing. Thank you to my team for everything."

Kenneth Tan, team co-owner: “There are no words that can express the heartbreak I felt for the team and Samantha after losing the championship due to a faulty, almost inconsequential, part in the fuel system. However, I felt so encouraged after seeing the team’s passion, dedication, and the will to never give up. The crew was only focused on finding the problem and fixing it as quickly as possible so Sam can go back out and try to recover and win the championship, even for just one extra point. That was all it took to win but in the end, we did everything right and it was just not meant to be. I am very proud of our crew, our engineers, our drivers and everyone who put all their efforts for our team to win. There is no doubt in my mind that we are a winning team. Shout out to our sister car 28 and the Choksey family for being a part of the journey this year; to our crew chief, Marc Bucsa, who worked tirelessly for the past two seasons in putting together an amazing crew that evolved to a team this year and ensured that our cars were always well prepared for each race. To our team manager, Jon, who has helped Sam and the team get to where we are today. I feel so bad but in the end, we can keep our heads up high knowing that we did everything else perfectly and we should have won the Indy 8H and championship had it not been for a defective batch of fuel part. We’ll lick our wounds and be back stronger in 2025.”

Qualifying
For the 2024 Indianapolis 8 Hour, BMW M Motorsport legend Bill Auberlen and teammate Varun Choksey were joined aboard the #28 BMW M4 GT3 by Philipp Eng. Tellingly, the three-time Spa 24 Hours winner, Rolex at Daytona 24 class winner, and 2015 Porsche Supercup champion also took overall victory at the Indianapolis 8 Hour in 2023.

Samantha Tan and BMW M works driver Neil Verhagen meanwhile were joined in the sister #38 BMW M4 GT3 by Pirelli GT4 America Silver-class championship leader John Capestro-Dubets.

After a solid start to its weekend in both Free Practice and Pre-Qualifying, ST Racing put the hammer down in the first of three 15-minute qualifying sessions, as Varun (#28) and Samantha (#38) banked the second and fifth fastest times in PRO and PRO/AM respectively. Valued circuit knowledge for John and typically fast pace by Neil were enough to secure the #38 15th on the overall grid and 6th in the PRO/AM class. Varun, Philipp and Bill meanwhile, the latter a three-time class winner already at the Indianapolis 8 Hour, moved on to the Pole Shootout at Indianapolis, with the trio eventually qualifying 7th overall on the 23-car grid and 2nd in the PRO class.

Race
Having escaped a contentious fight into turn one on the opening lap, a rapid Philipp Eng was immediately in the fight for the PRO lead. Just over one lap into the eight-hour endurance event, the Austrian was already in a five-car fight for 3rd overall. Six minutes later, the #28 was up into the PRO lead, and after 12 minutes, Philipp – now 5th overall – was already seven seconds clear of his nearest class rival.

Slightly further back, Samantha was similarly putting the pace of the sister #38 BMW M4 GT3 to good use. The BMW M Motorsport ambassador, having held on to 6th in-class during a frenetic opening lap, thereafter started a meticulous climb to 2nd in PRO/AM across the opening 20 minutes. It was a flying start to the race for ST Racing, one that Samantha opted to extend into a double stint – keeping herself in podium contention as a result – when the event’s first full caution was thrown. Varun, now into the #28 BMW from Philipp, started his first stint still in the top seven.

Sadly, a fighting drive by Samantha was brought to a stuttering halt shortly after the first hour when a fuel pump issue brought the #38 BMW onto pitroad. An incredible turnaround by the ST Racing mechanics behind the wall meant Samantha was back into the race within the hour.

Further technical issues unfortunately also curtailed Neil’s stint in the car shortly after half-distance. Undeterred, and determined to make the finish of the eight-hour event, ST Racing’s mechanics redressed the issue once again, allowing Neil Verhagen to eventually take the chequered flag 10th in the PRO/AM class. A frustrating though nevertheless well-earned accolade given the team’s extraordinary efforts.

A charging stint by Varun meant ST Racing’s recent GT3 graduate was able to hold 2nd in PRO and even move up to 6th overall during his opening stint before handing over to season-long teammate Bill Auberlen. At two-thirds distance, and with Philipp back in for his second stint, the #28 BMW M4 GT3 was still 2nd in-class and within striking distance of the PRO leader.

An unfortunately timed full-course caution ended up unrepresentatively dropping the #28 BMW off the category podium heading into the closing stages. ST Racing was nevertheless able to conclude its GTWC American season with a top five in the PRO class at Indianapolis.

Neil Verhagen, driver (#38): “I want to start by expressing my deepest thanks to Samantha Tan Racing and BMW Motorsport for an incredible season. While finishing second in the championship doesn’t quite reflect all the hard work and dedication we put in, I’m proud of the journey we’ve had. The race at Indy was the turning point that ultimately ended our championship title hopes, but what happened was beyond our control and we deserved more. It was heartbreaking to lose the championship by just one point and to see how much it impacted the team emotionally, but we should all be proud of what we achieved together. Over 13 races, we secured 10 podiums, 3 wins, and 2 poles. A huge thank you to Samantha for giving it her all every single weekend—her improvement throughout the season was remarkable. And to Ken, Mark, and Jon—thank you for your trust in me to compete in the full season with ST Racing. We’ll come back stronger.”

John Capestro-Dubets, driver (#38): “What an amazing experience, I absolutely loved every moment behind the wheel of the STR M4 GT3. I want to thank everyone that was a part of this effort. Absolutely gutted for my teammates as they’ve come into the final round leading just to have something out of their control take it all away. This team is truly a family and I’m honored to have been drafted in for this event. Till next time, can’t wait to be back in GT3!”

ST Racing would like to extend its congratulations to BMW M Motorsport, which took a well-deserved third win overall at the Indianapolis 8 Hour in only the fifth annual running of the event. The team would also like to commend fellow BMW M customer Turner Motorsport for a fair and competitive championship fight in 2024.

Vasser Sullivan heads to the IMSA season finale at the Petit LeMans.
By: Vasser Sullivan Racing
October 9, 2024

Braselton, Georgia – The defending GTD PRO champion Vasser Sullivan Lexus team arrives at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta to compete in the 27th Petit Le Mans on Saturday, marking the final race of the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar season. Both the No. 12 and 14 Lexus RC F GT3 teams look to end their seasons on a high note at the 2.54-mile Georgia road course where the program has experienced success in the past.

Jack Hawksworth, Ben Barnicoat and the No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3 come to the final race of the IMSA season with Lexus sitting fourth in the GTD PRO manufacturer standings, only 98 points behind second place. The Brits nearly secured their fifth podium finish of 2024 at Indianapolis three weeks ago but came home fourth at the checkered flag to finish with a solid points day. They return to Road Atlanta where Hawksworth has claimed the pole position the last two seasons and the No. 14 team were GTD PRO race victors in 2022, earning the first endurance win for the Vasser Sullivan Lexus program. INDYCAR driver Kyle Kirkwood returns to the team this weekend to join Hawksworth and Barnicoat for the 10-hour endurance race. The last time the trio ran together in the No. 14 RC F GT3, the team earned its first Twelve Hours of Sebring victory back in March.

The lineup of Frankie Montecalvo, Parker Thompson and Aaron Telitz stays the same this weekend for the No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3 in the GTD class. The drivers arrive for the Petit Le Mans eager for a strong weekend to finish out 2024. Like their No. 14 teammates, the No. 12 has run strong at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta in the past, which includes a pole by Montecalvo in 2020. Lexus is sixth in the GTD class manufacturer standings heading into the weekend, 11 points behind Aston Martin in fifth position. Lexus also has the potential to reach second in the GTD manufacturer standings , currently 139 behind the runner-up position.

Live television coverage of the Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta on Saturday will be broadcast on NBC from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. EST, followed by coverage on USA Network from 6:00 to 10:30 p.m. EST. Live flag-to-flag coverage of the 10-hour endurance race can be seen on Peacock. Vasser Sullivan Driver Quotes
JACK HAWKSWORTH, No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3
How are you feeling heading to Petit Le Mans this weekend?

“This season has flown by, and I can't believe we are back at Petit Le Mans once again! It goes without saying, but this event is a highlight on the IMSA schedule and one of the events every driver wants to win at some point during their career. Our Vasser Sullivan Lexus team has won it before in 2022, and we know what it takes to get the job done -- perfect execution, teamwork and a great car at the end of the race. We’ll be doing everything we can to end the season strong and claim another big win for the Lexus RC F GT3.”

BEN BARNICOAT, No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3
What excitement does this race bring for you and the team?

“I can't believe the final race of the season is upon us already! It's been a trying season for our Vasser Sullivan Lexus Racing team, but we're ready to go out on a high. Petit Le Mans is my favorite race on the calendar. I love the track and the amazing atmosphere that builds within Road Atlanta for an epic 10-hour race. We’ve won Petit Le Mans before and we always have a fantastic race car here thanks to our great engineering crew and mechanics. I know we have everything we need to go and do it again!”

KYLE KIRKWOOD, No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3
How does it feel to be back behind the wheel of the No. 14 RC F GT3?

“It’ll be nice to be back in the No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3 alongside Jack (Hawksworth) and Ben (Barnicoat) once again. It’s crazy to think the last time I competed with the team was back in March where we went on to win the Sebring 12-hour race, the first time the team has won there. Road Atlanta has been really good to our team in the past. We always give ourselves a good shot at winning this event and I think we can expect the same for this year.”

FRANKIE MONTECALVO, No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3
What are your emotions heading into this weekend?

“Can’t believe we are coming to the last race of the season here at Road Atlanta. This season has been full of ups and downs, but we plan on ending the season strong for the No. 12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus team. Road Atlanta and the Petit Le Mans is one of the best events we race all year. It’s a track that suits the Lexus RC F GT3 well and is one of my all-time favorites. Looking forward to getting out there!”

PARKER THOMPSON, No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3
What’s it like being back at Road Atlanta?

"Petit Le Mans is special and winning this race at Road Atlanta is something every driver wants on their resume. The old school circuit, the challenges of an endurance contest and the rise of competition for the IMSA season finale make this race truly unique. The No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3 has shown great pace all season. Frankie (Montecalvo) and I have taken pole three times this season, and on multiple occasions, even been at the front in the final laps on race day. Unfortunately, luck hasn’t been on our side when it comes to finding the podium. From top-to-bottom, everyone on this squad has worked hard and never let up. I’d love to see this Vasser Sullivan team rewarded for their efforts. There’s no better way to do that than with a huge performance at Petit. I’m going to give it everything I’ve got!”

AARON TELITZ, No. 12 Lexus RC F GT3
What are your thoughts going into the Petit Le Mans?

“It’s already Petit Le Mans week! It’s hard to believe as this season has flown by. It’s been a crazy year for the No. 12 Vasser Sullivan Lexus team, but I know we’re all ready to leave it all on the track at Road Atlanta. It’s my personal favorite endurance race on the calendar. The fans are awesome, the track is amazing, and it always delivers the action!”

Kyle Marcelli, Danny Formal, Graham Doyle will race the No. 45 DEX Imaging Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2 at the Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.
By: Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti
October 8, 2024

The Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti (WTRAndretti) No. 45 DEX Imaging Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2 team will enter the final race of the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (IWSC) season with MOTUL Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. This follows a strong showing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), where the GTD team secured its best endurance race finish of the season, indicating an upward trajectory as the team heads into the final round.

Kyle Marcelli. Danny Formal and Graham Doyle will return as the driver lineup for the No. 45 car as they take on the ten-hour endurance classic. Road Atlanta represents an opportunity for the team to finish the season strong after testing at Road Atlanta last month. The challenging 2.54-mile, 12-turn circuit will require the team to maintain the strong form they have shown in the previous rounds while navigating a busy track throughout all ten hours.

Marcelli and Formal have proven themselves in the No. 45 car across a variety of racetracks, showing incredible pace throughout the entirety of the season. Doyle has also shown a strong ability to keep consistent pace with his competitors and teammates, despite Petit Le Mans representing just his fifth start. Entering the final race, the WTRAndretti GTD team is poised for a positive result to finish their inaugural season.

“Everyone is excited for Petit Le Mans,” said Team Principal, Wayne Taylor. “They had a good race at Indy, and I know that they had a good test at Road Atlanta. Graham Doyle will once again join Danny and Kyle, so I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do this weekend and hopefully get another good result to end the season.”

The No. 45 DEX Imaging Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2 team will have its first on-track action at Road Atlanta with practice at 10:40 a.m. ET on Thursday, October 10 followed by qualifying on Friday, October 11 at 3:25 p.m. ET. The MOTUL Petit Le Mans is set for a 12:10 p.m. ET start on Saturday, October 12 for the ten-hour event with broadcast beginning at 12 p.m. ET on air for the opening hours from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET on NBC followed by USA Network broadcast from 6 p.m. ET through 10:30 p.m. ET. while Peacock will host full event coverage.

No. 45 DEX Imaging Lamborghini GT3 EVO2 Drivers
Kyle Marcelli: “Indianapolis was a positive race for us in the No. 45, and a good platform to launch us into Road Atlanta 10-hour, Petit Le Mans! While the circuit length is a similar 2.5-mile, the race flow at Indianapolis and Road Atlanta could not be more different! Road Atlanta is high-speed, high-risk and old school. Managing the faster LMP2 and GTP prototype traffic is critical for both survival and speed. Our spotters and strategists will be extremely valuable to us behind the wheel. While IMSA is thriving and GTD is more competitive than ever, we are excited for the challenge and aiming to end our 2024 campaign with another best finish for the DEX Imaging Lamborghini Huracan."”

Danny Formal: “Well, just like that the season comes to an end. The last race of the year, Petit Le Mans 10 -hour race. Amazing racetrack, amazing facility. This was my second ever race in IMSA competition in 2020 was at Road Atlanta, so it brings back a lot of memories for me. We had a great test there last month and Graham got up to speed quickly. Kyle and I were on pace with everyone else there, so super excited and so grateful to be hard of this team - especially for this race, it's just going to be insane. I'm so grateful to be part of Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti and the DEX Imaging No. 45. We've been preparing for this one. We finished on the lead lap at Indy, our first top 10 in an endurance round. We will keep the momentum going and hopefully we get a top five here at Road Atlanta.”

Graham Doyle: “After Indy, which I believe was a turning point for the No. 45 endurance crew, we are looking to capitalize on our momentum and continue our positive growth into the final race of the season. It's truly unbelievable that the 2024 season is coming to a close, and looking back, the improvement in our performance has been incredible. Ending at an iconic track like Road Atlanta, we hope to maintain this momentum and finish the season on a high note.”

Formula Regional Americas and Formula 4 U.S. return to Candian Tire Motorsport Park in 2025.
By: Formula Regional Americas
September 27, 2024

Charlotte, North Carolina – With 2025 quickly approaching, Formula Regional Americas Championship (FR Americas), Formula 4 United States Championship (F4 U.S.) and Ligier JS F4 Series (JS F4) have announced their 2025 race schedules. Mixing some of the most iconic circuits in North America with some of the best training grounds for young talent, each series will have a calendar focused on driver development and safety. In total, eight tracks are featured, as FR Americas competes at all eight venues, F4 U.S. at seven and JS F4 at six of the renowned circuits.

“We’re really looking forward to 2025 with FR Americas, F4 U.S. and JS F4,” said Race Director Scott Goodyear. “We’ve incorporated a lot of feedback from our community while building these schedules, and we’re excited with what’s planned. To have Barber Motorsports Park and Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on the schedule—those are tracks where drivers are really challenged and you see them develop over the course of the weekend. Likewise, there’s few places in America that hold the same significance as racing across the yard of bricks at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Each series continues to deliver great value with the lowest cost per mile compared to other professional racing series in North America, as well as the other Formula 4 and Formula Regional championships around the globe. Pair that with the impressive wheel-to-wheel competition like we’ve seen this season, and you’ll find that our series are a superb training ground for young drivers.”

As has become a tradition over the last few years, all three championships will open their season at NOLA Motorsports Park while headlining a special open-wheel weekend in The Big Easy. From there, it’s off to Elkhart Lake, Wis., where all three championships will take on the challenging Road America. Next, FR Americas will once again have the honor of racing across the yard of bricks as competitors take on Indianapolis Motor Speedway over Father’s Day Weekend. The following weekend, all three championships will reconvene at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Everyone will return to New Jersey Motorsports Park, which offers some of the most competitive racing all year. Then, FR Americas and F4 U.S. will head north of the border to race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park over Labor Day weekend. Following a one-year hiatus, all three series will return to VIRginia International Raceway, before closing out the season and crowning the 2025 champions at the highly-anticipated Barber Motorsports Park.

JS F4, F4 U.S. and FR Americas combine to form a powerful ladder on the Road to F1. Graduates of the championships have consistently advanced their careers, with alumni among the starting fields of the Indianapolis 500, INDYCAR, FIA Formula 3, IMSA, NASCAR, Super Formula, INDY NXT and more. One of the most powerful ways that the championships provide a forward trajectory is through scholarship programs, which include everything from champion-winning scholarships, to diversity scholarships, and a karts-to-cars scholarship program.

In 2025, the Ligier JS F4 Series Driver Champion will once again win a scholarship to compete in F4 U.S. the following season. Valued at $186,700, the prize includes the lease of an F4 U.S. chassis and Ligier Storm engine from Ligier Automotive, two sets of tires per event from Hankook Motorsports and race entry fees from Parella Motorsports Holdings (PMH).

The 2025 F4 U.S. Driver Champion will also receive a scholarship to step up to the next level—FR Americas—the following season. The winner will be provided the use of a JS F3 chassis from Ligier Automotive, an F3 engine developed, engineered and provided by Mountune, three sets of tires per event from Hankook Motorsports, and race entry fees from PMH, for a package valued at $264,900. Both scholarship prizes cover the full cost of the season, excluding testing, prep and travel costs.

Details for the revamped FR Americas Driver Champion prize will be announced in the coming weeks.

FR Americas, F4 U.S. and JS F4 will close out their current season, crowning their champions at Circuit of The Americas, October 31-November 3. Tickets for the COTA SpeedTour are available now at SpeedTour.net. Fans at home will be able to enjoy a live stream of the weekend’s action, available on the SpeedTourTV YouTube Channel.
