Despite a difficult weekend, ST Racing maintained their lead in the Pro/Am class.

A resilient weekend for Samantha Tan Racing at Road America ensured the team completed round five of this year’s GT World Challenge America still leading the PRO/AM Team and Driver standings.
 
Buoyed by its recent run of form at Elkhart Lake, which includes two wins and three further podium finishes on its two most recent outings in Wisconsin, ST Racing made a strong start to the GTWC America weekend with both cars qualifying for the opening 90-minute race of the weekend inside the top two of their respective classes. In a particularly impressive showing, ST Racing’s #28 BMW M4 GT3 started race one from the overall front row after topping the weekend’s first official practice session.
 
Fluctuating conditions and an on-track contact from another competitor however meant the Canadian team was unable to fully benefit from both the early pace of its BMWs. Despite the frustration though, two points-paying finishes for both cars at Road America means ST Racing continues to lead the PRO/AM standings by 43 points, and is still well in the fight for PRO class honors heading into the two final GTWC America rounds of 2024.
 
Samantha Tan, co-owner/driver: “Road America was an emotional rollercoaster and far more dramatic than our other race weekends this season… The unpredictable and constantly changing weather conditions made it increasingly difficult to find a good setup for the car. In Race 1, we unfortunately made the call to start on wet tires shortly after a downpour, but the track dried in mere minutes after we had set off on our warm up lap. We pushed hard till the checkered to make up for lost time after our extra pit stop for slicks. Our podium streak ended when we crossed the line P5 in class. Race 2 was our redemption race, with Neil starting P6 overall. After two strong stints and quick pit stop, I finished the race P4 overall, P2 in class. This kept us with a good lead in the championship points, but we will have to ensure we maintain focus in the last rounds and keep pushing as we near the end of the season.”
 
 
Race 1
A strong start for BMW Motorsport legend Bill Auberlen sadly came to naught when an overambitious move from a rival behind led to minor contact at turn three. A bold decision to start the race on wet tires also backfired, as the rain that was predicted failed to materialize and the damp track dried out faster than expected.
 
Alongside a confusing and misguided drive-through penalty for the turn three incident, the #28 lost further time later on when a fueling issue brought the car back onto pit road. Consistent pace from both Bill and teammate Varun Choksey however meant the #28 nevertheless came home 4th in the PRO class.
 
In the sister car, a strong start by Samantha Tan meant the #38 BMW retained 6th overall at the start. Also compelled to pit early to change to dry tires before the mandatory pit window opened, the #38 recovered to finish race one 5th in the PRO/AM class, though a typically tenacious drive from BMW works driver Neil Verhagen.
 
Tellingly, race one at Road America marked the first time that ST Racing’s #38 BMW has finished off the PRO/AM podium in GT World Challenge America competition this season.
 
Race 2
Better track conditions on Sunday proved crucial to salvaging ST Racing’s Road America weekend. Keen to remedy the team’s difficulties the previous day, Neil (#38) and Varun (#28) ran a consistent pace across the opening half of the race, maintaining 3rd and 4th in-class respectively before making their mandatory mid-race pit stops.
 
Rapid pit work by ST Racing’s mechanics meant the #28, now with Bill onboard, moved into the overall top 10 on-track, while the #38 (Samantha) rejoined the race in 4th. In a nod to her increasingly reliable race craft, a mature drive by Samantha was enough to secure 4th overall on the road and 2nd on the PRO/AM podium.
 
ST Racing’s championship hopes were further aided when a puncture dropped its closest title rival, Turner Motorsports, to the back of the field, one lap down.
 
Auberlen meanwhile completed a robust charge through the field to finish 6th overall and 4th in-class, as one of the fastest cars on track in the final stint. The #28 picked up the hard charger award by gaining 6 positions throughout the race.
 
Neil Verhagen, driver (#38): “Road America was a weekend full of ups and downs. The ever-changing weather made it tough to get a solid read on the track during each session. Unfortunately, in Race 1, our podium streak came to an end with a 5th place finish. However, we bounced back in Race 2, securing 2nd place on the podium—a crucial result for our championship fight. I’m excited to head to Barber Motorsports Park, which will be a new challenge for both myself and the team. Thanks again to everyone for the incredible support throughout the weekend!”
 
Bill Auberlen, driver (#28): “After the end of a challenging weekend at Road America I sit in my airplane seat headed home full of all the weekends emotions. All the highs, the lows and everything in between. We were P1 at times and last at times. It’s so easy to focus on choices and things that didn’t go your way, but honestly after this weekend I’m going to focus on all the amazing things. I mean seriously I’m driving the best race cars in the world for the best company in the world. I get to spend the better part of a week with my awesome team and teammates, engineers, guys, girls, friends and fans. Let’s keep things in perspective, I feel like the luckiest guy in the world and I never allow myself to forget that. 
 
Now I head home to my family which is always great. For the next couple of weeks I’ll train hard physically, reflect on anything than could have been improved and put that in my racing library. Meditate a bit and try to visualize how to get that next victory at Barber. I would like to thank BMW for building such amazing cars, my teammate Varun for bringing it every single weekend, my STR team for working so crazy hard, and to all our sponsors and supporters for letting us do what we do. Now let’s all meet up in Alabama together and celebrate the podium to come together. Makes it way more satisfying!!! See you all there.”
 
Samantha Tan Racing’s GT World Challenge America program continues in just a couple of weeks time in Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park on 6-7-8 September. The season finale – the Indianapolis 8 Hours – will take place on 4-5-6 October at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
 
Alongside its North American campaign, ST Racing is also set to make a one-off return to the 24H SERIES on 13-14-15 September as part of the 25th edition of the 24H BARCELONA at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

The 35th annual BC Historic Motor Races took place at Mission Raceway.

The 35th running of the “Titanium Ford” B.C. Historic Motor Races (BCHMR) took place under great weather conditions at the Speed-Fanatics Motorsports Circuit, Mission Raceway Park in Mission B.C.  Vintage & historic racers from B.C., Alberta, Washington, Oregon, California and one entrant from England all came together for the two-day event (August 10-11, 2024) put on by the Vintage Racing Club of B.C. (VRCBC) and hosted by the Sports Car Club of B.C. (SCCBC).
 
There were four race groups this year consisting of Group “A” (Fast Cars, pre 1980), Group “B” (Faster Cars, pre 1980),  Group “C” (Vintage cars from 1980-1999) and an Open Wheel/Sports Car group.  This year there were also two feature races, on Saturday was the second round of the West Coast Sprite-Midget Challenge and Sunday featured the “Driver’s Edge” Spec Miata Race of Champions.
 
The BCHMR featured lots of exciting racing in the Group “A”, Group “B” and Group “C” divisions for closed wheel vintage production & improved production cars.  Group “A” had five races with Langley Washington’s Michael Deilke in his 1969 BMW 2002 taking home the first two wins, Rossland B.C.’s Robin Strachan taking home wins in races three, four and five.  
 
There were also five races for Group “B” with Anthony Nadalin from Woodinville Washington in his 1965 FFR Challenge taking the race one win. In race two Mike Gibson from Langley B.C. in his 1998 Nissan 240SX took home the win. Race one winner Anthony Nadalin also took home the remaining three race wins in Group “B”. The Group “C” race one winner was Ryan O’Conner of Vancouver B.C. in his beautiful 1985 Chevrolet Camaro,  The race two winner was Coquitlam B.C.’s Harry Watson in his 1990 Mazda Miata.  Races three and four were won by Brad Zimmerman of Maple Ridge B.C. in a 1995 Nissan 240SX.  
 
Ryan O’Conner also took home the win in race number five. The final race of the weekend for the combined group “A”,”B” and “C” cars for the Jim Latham Memorial Trophy was won by Ryan O’Conner followed by Cameron Turtle in his 1979 Mazda RX7 and Jon Wright in a 1990 BMW E30.
 
The Open Wheel/Sports Racer group also had five races over the weekend with John McCoy from Bellingham Washington in his 1986 Mallock Mk27 taking home the race one win. 
 
Abbotsford B.C.’s Christopher Britten took home the wins in races two, four and five in a 1999 Van Diemen RF99 and Alan Baker from Vancouver B.C. took home the win in race number three in a 1998 Van Diemen formula ford. Two of the fan favourites in the open wheel group were Marty Knoll from Creston B.C. in a 1975 Johnston JM3 Formula Atlantic car that use to race at the famous Westwood Motorsport Park in Coquitlam B.C. back in the days of the Players Formula Atlantic series.  The other favourite was Langley B.C.’s Doug Seal in his beautifully prepared 1967 Lotus Type 41.
 
Saturdays feature race for the Sprite-Midget Challenge Series was won by Bill Okell (Victoria B.C.)  in a 1992 MG Midget followed closely by Geoff Tupholme (Pritchard B.C.) in a 1970 MG Midget and Paul Quackenbush (Grants Pass OR) in a 1959 Austin Healey Sprite. 
 
Sundays feature race for the “Drivers Edge” Spec Miata Challenge was won by Daniel Friedman (Vancouver B.C.) in a Speed-Fanatics Motorsports 1990 Mazda Miata followed by the Delta Velocity team of Mark Nickel (Surrey B.C.) in his 1990 Mazda Miata and Corey Macleod (Langley B.C.) 2001 Mazda Miata.
 
Once again this year several SOVREN racers from Washington and Oregon state made the trek up to Canada to battle for double SOVREN points and enjoy some great Canadian hospitality as well as make some new friends.
 
This year the SOVREN Canada Cup was presented to Loren Campbell from Issaquah Washington who came north with his 1959 Austin Healey Sprite  and was recognized for his unbridled enthusiasm for vintage racing as well as promoting the West Coast Sprite-Midget Challenge Series.
 
The VRCBC was grateful for their participation and they all had nothing but great things to say about the event  (a few of them even told the mayor of Mission how much they loved coming up to Mission year after year)and were planning on coming back in the future & bringing more SOVREN members with them.
 
The other trophies for the weekend were the Abbotsford Cup (Formula Vee racer Aaron Robbins), Westwood Trophy (Formula Ford racer Erle Archer).  The SCCBC award for spirited driving was presented this year to Michael Deilke and his 1969 BMW 2002.
 
The Battered Cup which nobody wants to win was awarded this year to Courtenay B.C.’s Michael Zbarsky in his 1988 Chevrolet Camaro who had several issues on the weekend.  The final award for the weekend was the Chairman’s award that this year was presented by event chairperson Gayle Baird to Loren Campbell in his 1959 Austin Healey Sprite.  (Gayle as usual did double duty during the weekend racing both her 1991 Honda Civic and 1964 Formula Vee).  Even though there was no trophy (maybe there should be one next year), the furthest travelled award was Dr. Richard Bateman from Westerham Hill, Kent, Great Britain in a 1979 Datsun 210.
 
At the end of the weekend everyone went home happy and excited about returning next year for the 36th running of this great event.  The VRCBC would like to thank all the participants, volunteers, course marshals & emergency crew for making this year’s event another great success.   VRCBC would like also to thank the B.C. Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin - Jean-Frédéric Laberge and Kyle Marcelli competed at Road America this weekend for the Fanatec GT World Challenge event. The Canadian duo secured third place in the Pro-Am Class in their debut race, a testament to the team’s strong pairing.
 
Although Laberge participated in the GT America races at VIRginia International Raceway last month, this was his first time competing in a Fanatec GT World Challenge race. He was behind the wheel of the No. 92 Dagobert / Éclair Porsche 992 GT3 R, prepared by GT Racing.
 
“We’re at a disadvantage compared to other teams who have been competing since the beginning of the season,” stated Laberge. “However, I have to commend Eric Côté’s crew for their stellar performance all weekend. GT Racing has brought us up to speed in no time. With Kyle Marcelli as a co-driver, everything fell into place for us this weekend.”
 
In the first qualifying session, Laberge set the 7th fastest lap in the Pro-Am Class, while Marcelli placed the Porsche 992 GT3 R in 5th position for Race 2.
 
The Hard Charger Award that the co-drivers earned in Race 1 highlighted their success. Laberge started the race in 13th place and quickly made his way toward the front of the field. By the end of lap 1, he was 11th overall, eventually climbing to 7th overall.
 
Kyle Marcelli then took over and gained two positions, however he was passed on a restart and ran 6th place overall—3rd in the Pro-Am Class—for the remainder of the race, securing the team’s first podium in its debut outing.
 
"I think we exceeded our expectations in Race 1,” said Marcelli. “We came in with a mindset to avoid mistakes both on track and in the pit lane, and to ensure our choreography was dialed in. We executed a solid pit stop, hitting the mark without going over or under, and we checked all the boxes we aimed for. The podium was just the cherry on top, and we're really grateful we were able to pull it off.”
 
He continued, explaining, “Our speed is consistently improving. We're benchmarking ourselves against the other Porsches, and while we're faster than some and slower than others, we're currently in the middle of the pack. There's still a bit more speed to be found from our car, and a few small details to iron out, but we're very close and really happy with our performance in this first race."
 
Race 2 unfortunately didn’t go as planned. Marcelli started the race and kept out of trouble. However, when Jean-Frédéric Laberge took over, he was spun out by a competitor while running 12th overall. Laberge was relegated to the end of the field but didn’t lose a lap. GT Racing’s outfit finished the race 7th in class.
 
“It was a great learning experience,” said Laberge. “I am overall very happy with the outcome of the weekend. Race 2 was tougher than the first, but I’m pleased to see that we were running consistently and setting good lap times. Kyle has been a tremendous co-driver, and I really value his input. I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel in just two weeks at Barber Motorsports Park.”
 
The Fanatec GT World Challenge now heads south for their penultimate round of the season at the famed Barber Motorsports Park on September 7 and 8.

Kyle Marcelli is back with Danny Formal for VIR.

The Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti (WTRAndretti) No. 45 DEX Imaging Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2 team will finish out the sprint portion of the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship at VIRginia International Raceway (VIR). With a string of three consecutive sprint events, the No. 45 GTD team remain within the top 10 in the championship points standings.
 
Kyle Marcelli will return behind the wheel of the No. 45 DEX Imaging Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2 alongside co-driver, Danny Formal, after missing the last round at Road America due to a minor arm injury. Both Marcelli and Formal have success at the 3.27-mile road course as the pair swept both races for the win in the 2023 Lamborghini Super Trofeo Championship. Marcelli and Formal will be looking to capitalize on their familiarity with VIR as they have finished inside the top six in three of the four sprint races thus far this season.
 
“I am really proud of this team and drivers,” said Wayne Taylor, Team Principal, WTRAndretti. “Our organization took on a lot this year with our expansion into GTD, so to be sitting in the Top 10 in the Championship, we should be proud. We still have a few races to go and I am excited to see what more we can achieve. With the support of DEX Imaging and Lamborghini, I am confident we will continue to show our strength on and off the track.”
 
The No. 45 DEX Imaging Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2 team will begin preparations at VIR with practice at 2:30 p.m. ET on Friday, August 23 followed by qualifying on Saturday, August 24, at 4:50 p.m. ET. The Michelin GT Challenge at VIR is set for 12:10 p.m. ET for the two-hour, 40-minute sprint with broadcast beginning at 12 p.m. ET on USA Network and Peacock.

Kyle Marcelli: “VIR is a special place to drive. It’s a unique, old-school circuit that is high risk, high reward. The layout offers a variety of low-speed and high-speed corners along with elevation and lots of curb strikes making this place an engineering challenge, and often a give-and-take mentality. I'm excited to return to the No. 45 DEX Imaging Lamborghini for what is the final sprint race of the season. The goal is clear, we will do everything we can to get a podium finish.”
 
Danny Formal: “VIR is up next - the last round of the sprint championship. It is my favorite track in the world. Just one of those tracks that commitment is everything and risking it gets the biscuit, so super excited to get back to VIR. I’m excited to get back to racing with Kyle, my teammate for many, many years. It was great to race with Sandy at Road America and it's great to have Kyle back also. It's going to be a hot weekend, it's always muggy at VIR but our No.45 DEX Imaging Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2 team is ready to go for it. It's the last sprint round, so we are going for a podium. We really advanced the car in Road America, especially during the race, our race pace was quite good, so super excited and ready for it.”

Trois-Rivières native Frédérick Magny suffered a mechanical failure that caused a high-speed accident at GP3R..

The Super Production Challenge (SPC) series presented three races last weekend as part of the 54th edition of the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières. After finishing Race 1 in sixth position Friday evening in torrential rain, Trois-Rivières driver Frédérick Magny was the victim of a serious accident on the ninth lap of Race 2, presented Saturday on a dry track.
 
Driving the #12 car, Frédérick was in fifth place when on the ninth lap, he suffered a complete electronic failure of the ABS system at the end of the start/finish straight. Deprived of any means of braking, he hit the tire wall, forming the protection of turn 1 of the Trois-Rivières track, head-on at an estimated speed of 146 km/h. He got himself out of the crashed car and taken to the track's medical center, then to the Trois-Rivières hospital. Frédérick Magny suffered a fracture to his right foot that requires surgery in the coming days, as well as a fracture to a cervical vertebra. He remains hospitalized and will then have to respect a convalescence period of approximately six months.
 
Witnessing the situation, the officials of the Super Production Challenge series would like to thank the rescue teams of the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières, the doctors and the hospital staff for their work and the care provided to the driver in the best possible conditions.
 
Experienced and talented, Frédérick started in SPC series in 2015. Driver for M-Performances team, he has collected three overall Top 5s and twelve Top 10s to date. He was competing in his twenty-ninth race in the series on Saturday.
 
Wishing to respect medical confidentiality, the series officials will not make any further comments on this subject. It would also be appreciated to comment on this news on social networks and elsewhere with messages of encouragement for Frédérick Magny, who has already expressed his desire to go looking for a new car, to replace his Nissan Z destroyed on Saturday, for the next seasons of Super Production Challenge!
