Innisfil, Ontario – It was an action-packed season opener for 22 Racing at Sunset Speedway with Treyten Lapcevich taking the win and Alex Tagliani finishing 7th. The highly anticipated NASCAR Pinty’s series season got underway yesterday with the NTN Ultimate Bearing Experience 250.

Both Alex Tagliani and Treyten Lapcevich established a good pace during the practice session with Lapcevich posting the fastest time in his No. 20 RGC / Qwick Wick / FBM Chevrolet Camaro at 14.853. Tagliani was 6th fastest at 14.962.

The official qualifying session saw Lapcevich secure 2nd place behind his RGC teammate Brandon Watson, and Tagliani capturing 8th.

Although Tagliani had noticed something was amiss with his No. 18 Viagra / St Hubert Chevrolet Camaro Chevrolet during qualifying. He put his faith in his team to diagnose and resolve the issue, but this forced him to start the race at the back of the pack.

After the return of a long-awaited driver autograph session, the command to start the engines was given and the NTN Ultimate Bearing Experience 250 was finally underway.

Tagliani was working hard to get his car back up to the front, by the halfway point in the race he was already back in 8th position. Lapcevich had been battling at the front with some popular names in the NASCAR Pinty’s Series, and was in 3rd with 125 laps left.

There was a planned pit stop at lap 128 to allow teams to fill up on fuel and get four new tires.

After two cautions near the end of the race, Treyten Lapcevich still sat in 3rd behind Marc-Antoine Camirand and Raphael Lessard. With only 2 laps to go, Camirand and Lessard were battling for 1st and Lapcevich was able to sneak past both of them and take 1st place. Lessard was following very close, but in the end it was Lapcevich that took the win. Alex Tagliani had fought hard and pushed his way up from the back for a 7th place finish.

Lapcevich and his entire team were thrilled with the driver’s first win in the NASCAR Pinty’s Series and are hoping for many more.

The NTN Ultimate Bearing Experience 250 will air on TSN on Sunday, May 22, at 4:00 p.m. ET. The race also will air on RDS2 on Saturday, June 4, at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Next the team will be heading to the legendary Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on May 22, 2022.

Milverton, Ontario – The NASCAR Pinty’s Series takes to the track for the first event of 2022 this weekend at Sunset Speedway with The NTN Ultimate Bearing Experience 250. The highly anticipated season gets underway on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at the 1/3 mile paved oval located in Innisfil, Ontario.

22 Racing is pleased to field two Pinty’s teams this season featuring Alex Tagliani who lapped the entire field before crossing the finish line to win at Sunset Speedway in 2015, and the 2021 Jostens Rookie of the Year Treyten Lapcevich who finished 4th and 9th at Sunset Speedway last year. 

It was a very busy winter for the 22 Racing team preparing the cars for the upcoming season, but they are ready to get the No. 20 RGC / Qwick Wick / FBM Chevrolet Camaro and the No. 18 Viagra / St. Hubert Chevrolet Camaro out on the track and win some races.

Race day kicks off with practice at 12:30 p.m on Saturday followed by qualifying taking place from 5 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.. Autograph session on the track will run from 5:40 p.m. – 6:20 p.m.. Driver introductions are scheduled at 6:35 p.m. with the NTN Ultimate Bearing Experience 250 going green at 7 p.m..

The race will be 250 laps (83.325 miles), with a planned pit stop around halfway for the teams to fill up on fuel and get 4 new tires. 

The full NASCAR Pinty’s Series season will again be broadcasted on TSN and RDS2 in Canada and MAVTV in the United States. Race fans in Canada can also watch NASCAR Pinty’s Series races LIVE on TSN.ca and the TSN app. Additionally, races will be streamed live on Flo Racing.

In addition to the Pinty’s cars, the 22 Racing Team is also fielding driver Kyle Steckly with the No. 22 APC Auto Parts / CANUSA / Qwick Wick Pro Late Model. Kyle will run in the weekly Delaware Speedway Series as well as the APC United Late Model Series.

Kyle’s season begins Friday, May 13 at Delaware Speedway with the 70th Season Opener at the track. Racing begins at 7:30 p.m. with the Pro Late Models running a 35 lap feature. In his Delaware Speedway debut in 2021, Kyle finished 7th out of 30 cars. He is eager to get back to the track and see what the 2022 season has in store for him.

L.P. Dumoulin Chases NASCAR Pinty’s Series History

After winning his third NASCAR Pinty’s Series championship last year, L.P. Dumoulin (No. 47 WeatherTech Canada / Groupe Bellemare Dodge) is poised to take the next step. 

A repeat championship in 2022 would put him in the record books for more than one feat – he would become the first driver in series history to successfully defend their title, but more importantly would tie Scott Steckly with a series-record fourth championship. 

And as has been the case for several years, Dumoulin is on the short list of championship favourites. The Trois-Rivieres native has finished in the top five in the standings every season since 2013.  His consistency and ability to avoid mistakes almost guarantee him a top-10 finish each week. In fact, Dumoulin has finished in the top 10 in 48 of the 56 races since 2017, an 86% rate.

Dumoulin’s title defense begins Saturday night with the NTN Ultimate Bearing Experience at Sunset Speedway. He won the 2020 season opener at the track in the first race following the COVID-19 pandemic delay. Sunset is one of three oval tracks at which Dumoulin has a win; he has two top fives and four top 10s in six races.

“I enjoy racing on this type of track,” Dumoulin said. “Our cars are very good and we have continued to improve our equipment this winter. Sunset Speedway has a steep banking and we have a large entry of good cars for the race - all we need to put on a great show.”

A strong Sunset result could put Dumoulin in the championship race driver’s seat early in the season. Race two on the schedule is at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP), a Dumoulin favourite. He earned his first career win at the track in 2013 and has not looked back since, winning three more races and racking up 12 top fives and 14 top 10s in 18 aces. 

Success will not come easy for Dumoulin, however, as a deep field of contenders tries to unseat him. No list of title favourites is complete without D.J. Kennington (No. 17 Castrol Edge / Cathcart Trucking Dodge), one of the most accomplished drivers in series history. Kennington suffered through a four-year winless drought but has returned to his winning ways with three trips to Victory Lane in the last two years.

22 Racing teammates Alex Tagliani (No. 18 Viagra / St. Hubert Chevrolet) and Treyton Lapcevich (No. 20 RGC Sports / Qwick Wick Chevrolet) represent opposite ends of the career spectrum and both finished in the top five last year. Expect both the respected veteran and the young up-and-comer to contend throughout the season.

And three-time series champion Andrew Ranger (No. 27 GM Paille Chevrolet) announced a return to the series as part of a growing stable of cars at Wight Motorsports.

Pinty’s Series returns to traditional cross-country schedule

The 2022 season marks a return to normalcy for the Pinty’s Series, in this case in the form of a 13-race country-wide schedule.  The previous two seasons had been cut short with races concentrated in Ontario and Quebec due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to traditional Pinty’s Series races in Toronto and the Western Swing (Edmonton and Saskatoon), the series will make its long-awaited dirt debut at Ohsweken Speedway on Aug. 16. The race was originally introduced as part of the 2020 schedule prior to the pandemic-related consolidations. 

The series will also make its debut in Newfoundland and Labrador on June 15 during the province’s Come Home 2022 celebration.  The 13-race schedule will take the series to five different provinces. 

Wight Motorsports to Field Five Cars 

Just three years into its existence, Wight Motorsports Inc. (WMI) has put together an impressive collection of drivers, headlined by Andrew Ranger. Ranger, who won the 2019 championship with David Wight as his crew chief, will be led by another series champion – Cayden Lapcevich. 

Veterans Mark Dilley (No. 64 Leland Chevrolet) and TJ Rinomato (No. 2 RGC Sports / Delta Bingo / Velamo Chevrolet) both return to WMI for a second season.  They will be joined by two top drivers – Glenn Styres (No. 0 GSR / Ohsweken Speedway Chevrolet), who was recently elected to the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame, and Brandon Watson (No. 9 GMS / Shear Metal Products / APC Chevrolet), the only two-time APC champion.

“It’s been a busy offseason for the WMI team building and preparing new cars and moving into a larger race shop to accommodate the growth we’ve experienced,” Wight said. “What a team we’ve assembled. To be entering only our third season in the Pinty’s Series and have this group of five drivers together, it’s pretty special what we’ve been able to accomplish.”

Raphael Lessard Eyes Sunset Repeat

Phenom Raphael Lessard may not be running the full Pinty’s Series schedule in 2022, but he does figure to be in contention to win every race he enters.  A look at the results of his brief career in the series will show the same. 

Lessard has three wins in his five career starts. The first came at his home track, Autodrome Chaudiere, in 2019 as he was pursuing a full-time entry in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. He swept both races at Sunset last season in the No. 80 WMI Chevrolet. This year, Lessard has moved to Ed Hakonson Racing and will pilot the No. 8 RJ Investment / Fast Eddie Speed Wear / Transit Chevrolet at the eight oval races on the schedule.

Louis-Philippe Dumoulin souhaite entrer dans l’histoire de la série NASCAR 

Après avoir remporté un troisième championnat de la série NASCAR Pinty's l'an dernier, Louis-Philippe Dumoulin (Dodge no 47 WeatherTech Canada / Groupe Bellemare) est prêt à passer à l'étape suivante. 

Un nouveau championnat en 2022 ajouterait deux exploits notoires à son palmarès : il deviendrait le premier pilote de l'histoire de la série à remporter deux titres d'affilée, et il rejoindrait Scott Steckly avec quatre championnats, un record dans la série. 

Louis-Philippe Dumoulin compte parmi la courte liste des favoris pour remporter le titre 2022 depuis plusieurs années. Le natif de Trois-Rivières a terminé dans le top-5 du classement chaque saison depuis 2013.  Sa constance et son habilité pour éviter les erreurs lui garantissent presque une place dans le top-10 à chaque course. En fait, Louis-Philippe Dumoulin a terminé dans le top-10 lors de 48 des 56 courses depuis 2017, soit 86 % des courses auxquelles il a participé.

La défense de son titre 2021 commencera samedi soir avec la NTN Ultimate Bearing Experience tenue au Sunset Speedway. Louis-Philippe Dumoulin avait remporté les premières courses de la saison 2020 sur cette piste alors que le calendrier avait été révisé selon les mesures anti Covid-19 de l'époque. Sunset Speedway est l'un des trois circuits ovales où Louis-Philippe Dumoulin a remporté une victoire, en plus de deux top-5 et quatre top-10 en six participations.

"J'aime bien courir sur ce type de piste", a déclaré Louis-Philippe Dumoulin. "Nos voitures sont très rapides et améliorons continuellement notre équipement. Sunset Speedway a une forte inclinaison et avec au moins 20 pilotes en pistes, tout y est pour offrir du spectacle."

Un bon résultat à Sunset positionnerait Louis-Philippe Dumoulin dans la course au titre dès le début de la saison. La deuxième course au programme se déroulera au Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP), une de ses pistes favorites. Il y a remporté sa première victoire en carrière en 2013 et continue de bâtir son palmarès depuis, remportant trois championnats et accumulant 12 top-5 et 14 top-10 en 18 courses sur cette piste. 

Cependant, le succès ne sera pas facile pour Dumoulin, car plusieurs concurrents tenteront de le déloger. Aucune liste de ces favoris pour le titre ne serait complète sans D.J. Kennington (Dodge n°17 Castrol Edge / Cathcart Trucking), l'un des pilotes les plus accomplis de l'histoire de la série. Kennington a connu une période de quatre ans sans victoire, mais il a renoué avec le succès avec trois victoires au cours des deux dernières saisons.

Les pilotes de 22 Racing, le vétéran Alex Tagliani (Chevrolet n°18 Viagra / St Hubert) et le très jeune Treyton Lapcevich (Chevrolet n°20 RGC Sports / Qwick Wick) sont aux antipodes de leurs carrières et ont tous deux terminé dans le top-5 en 2021. On peut s'attendre à ce que le rapide vétéran et le jeune espoir se battent tout au long de la saison.

Enfin, le triple champion de la série Andrew Ranger (Chevrolet n°27 GM Paillé) a annoncé son retour dans la série au sein d'une nouvelle équipe, Paillé Course // Racing, au volant d'une voiture préparée par Wight Motorsports.

La série Pinty's revient à son format traditionnel pancanadien

La série revient à un calendrier classique avec 13 courses qui couvre le pays. Les deux saisons précédentes avaient été écourtées, avec des courses concentrées en Ontario et au Québec en raison de la pandémie de COVID-19.

En plus des courses traditionnelles de la série Pinty's à Toronto et de la tournée dans les prairies (Edmonton et Saskatoon), la série fera ses débuts tant attendus sur terre battue au Ohsweken Speedway le 16 août. Cette course figurait au calendrier pour 2020 avant les modifications causées par la pandémie de 2020 et 2021. 

La série fera également ses débuts à Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador le 15 juin dans le cadre de la fête provinciale "Come Home 2022".  Au total, le calendrier de 13 courses amènera les concurrents dans cinq provinces. 

Cinq voitures pour Wight Motorsports 

Après seulement trois années d'existence, Wight Motorsports inc. (WMI) a réuni une impressionnante collection de pilotes, avec en tête Andrew Ranger. Ce dernier a remporté le championnat 2019 avec David Wight comme chef d'équipe, et sera dirigé cette saison par un autre ex-champion de la série - Cayden Lapcevich.

Les vétérans Mark Dilley (Chevrolet n°64 Leland) et TJ Rinomato (Chevrolet n°2 RGC Sports / Delta Bingo / Velamo) reviennent tous deux chez WMI pour une deuxième saison. Deux autres pilotes de premier plan s'y ajouteront : Glenn Styres (Chevrolet n°0 GSR / Ohsweken Speedway), qui a récemment été élu au Temple de la renommée du sport automobile canadien, et Brandon Watson (Chevrolet n°9 GMS / Shear Metal Products / APC), le seul double champion APC.

"L'intersaison a été très chargée pour l'équipe WMI qui a construit et préparé de nouvelles voitures, et déménagé dans un plus grand atelier afin de mieux répondre à la croissance que nous avons connue", a déclaré Wight. "Quelle équipe nous avons réunie ! Nous entamons seulement notre troisième saison dans la série Pinty's et nous comptons déjà cinq pilotes chez nous. Ce que nous avons pu accomplir en trois années d'activité est très spécial".

Raphael Lessard veut répéter sa performance gagnante de 2021 au Sunset Speedway

Raphaël Lessard ne participera peut-être pas à toutes les courses au calendrier 2022, mais jouera pour la victoire à chacune de ses sorties, comme il a toujours démontré dans le passé.

Lessard compte trois victoires à ses cinq présences en carrière en série Pinty’s. La première est survenue en 2019 sur sa piste locale, l'Autodrome Chaudière, au volant d’une voiture préparée par Dumoulin Compétition, alors qu'il cherchait à trouver un volant à temps plein dans la série NASCAR Camping World Truck. Il a balayé les deux courses au Sunset Speedway la saison dernière dans la Chevrolet WMI n°80. Cette année, Lessard passe chez Ed Hakonson Racing et pilotera la Chevrolet n°8 RJ Investment / Fast Eddie Speed Wear / Cadillac lors des huit courses ovales au calendrier.
