Spielberg, Austria – Friday, young Montreal-born driver Kami Laliberté returned to his hotel partly satisfied with the result of his first day on the Austrian Red Bull Ring. Once again, he had been among the fastest on track during the qualifying session but as he ran over some kerbs’, he also damaged his chassis to the point that it had to be changed.
Officially, the Van Amersfoort Racing driver had recorded times that were insuring him of a second row start for today’s race and tomorrow’s first race. But the damages encountered on Friday would oblige the team personnel to work long additional hours to fix his car and the ADAC officials, to allow him to keep running over the weekend; including being authorized to still start from the 4th place in today’s race.
“I do have to publicly commend the team and the determination of our mechanics who sacrificed precious hours of rest and sleep to have me on track today. Without their work and efforts, I wouldn’t have been able to enter the race this afternoon. I must also sincerely thank the ADAC stewards who let me start from the 2nd row. I really wished to thank my whole team with a good result, but it didn’t go as I intended. I’m really sad’’, said a repentant Laliberté after the race where he finished 28th.
At a restart on the 12th lap of the race where he was then 9th, the young Canadian was involved in an incident from which he came out with a flat tire. Far from the pit lane, he lost precious time as he returned to his box before rejoining at the back to end the race in 28th place. Not only did the driver of car number 35 lost a great occasion to add points to his season’s tally, he has seen himself condemn to start the 3rd and final race of the weekend far on the grid, this race’s starting position being determined by Saturday’s race result.
Previously in the morning race (9:50 am local time, 3:50 am ET), the Canadian will have the opportunity to earn a good result with a 3rd place start. The task will be much different in the afternoon (1:45 pm local time, 6:45 am ET) and will require patience from the young man.
