2015 Challenge Cup Series Champion Wins Two of Three Races at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

Bowmanville, Ontario – Challenge Cup Series driver and Champion Matt Garwood of Elmvale, ON headed to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (Mosport) this past weekend for round one of the 2016 Challenge Cup Series Championship. Garwood had his sights on his first win in Canada as he stood on the top step of the podium last August at PIRC (Pittsburgh International Race Complex).

This past Thursday Garwood along with his Matt Garwood Racing team travelled to the famed Canadian Tire Motorsport Park for a day of testing in preparation of the weekends on track activities. Garwood and team spent the day setting the car knowing the competition would be extremely tough!

It didn’t take Garwood long to get up to speed setting one of the fastest lap times during the open practice day at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. With qualifying and race one set for Friday the team knew a starting spot up front would set the team up for a good outcome.

Garwood’s efforts resulted in earning the fourth spot on the grid for the first race of the tripleheader weekend.

Garwood starting from row two in race one and with an impressive start he gained a few positions right after the green flag was waved. With an large lead pack of cars the race ended in Garwood favor claiming P2 overall and P1 in the Challenge Cup Series. This was Garwood’s second Challenge Cup Series win and first of 2016.

“I was extremely happy with our performance on track throughout the first race of the weekend. We played it right and ended up with a great finish out of a very competitive field.” said Garwood.

During Race 2 Garwood quickly make his way through the top five passing cars using any chance he had. After lap one Garwood had his sights set on the lead but he knew being patient was key to getting the job done. Throughout the race Garwood and fellow competitors had close and intense battles for the top spot on the podium. Garwood achieved P3 in class once again earing a spot on the famed podium.

With a good start during race three Garwood positioned himself in line behind the leader in the seven car pack. Garwood ran in the lead pack all race long fighting for the lead each lap. After a big last laps charge passing three cars Garwood wound up P2 overall and P1 in the Challenge Cup Series Class once again earing the top spot on the podium.

Garwood wishes to thank Crew Chief Sid Nye for his expertise and Bill Vallis (Vallis Motorsport) for his incredible support throughout the entire weekend. Also a special thanks to Danielle Davies, for the ongoing assistance throughout the weekend.
