Klettwitz, Germany – With the results he has already recorded during the first day of his current season third round and the 2nd place finish he earned this morning, young Montréal-born driver Kami Laliberté is currently living his best weekend so far in German Formula 4. On the Lausitzring, in Eastern Germany, the Van Amersfoort Racing (VAR) team member recorded the 5th fastest time in free trial session yesterday before being later the same day, the fastest of his group in the qualifying session. Today, starting the first of the three races of the weekend from the 2nd place on the grid, Laliberté let only one driver finishing ahead of him, young Mick Schumacher, the son of the great champion. The Canadian also managed to hold a charging Thomas Preining, the Austrian driver who took the third place.
‘’ My start was not the very best but I have been able to hold my 2nd place, being not too far from Schumacher.
But, we had an incident and a restart where Mick has been quite smart and went way ahead of me. For the balance of the race, I was aware that Preining was charging but I felt very comfortable, really at ease in my car and I am proud of the way I have been able to keep my lead over him. A podium, it is always a satisfying result’’, said the young man who with this finish collected some precious points that are helped him climb in the series standings.
In closing in late afternoon, because of his 2nd best time recorded the day before in qualifying, The Canadian was starting the second race from the 6th position on the grid. The driver had a good start and, following with a nice maneuver at corner number 7, he had climbed to 4th place after four laps.
Trying again this very same overtake at the same place, this time he got involved in a collision resulting in a spin. The driver returned to his pit box in order to check if the car had suffered any damage; before returning to the track at the back. He managed to regain six positions but concluded two laps behind the leaders. ‘’ It’s sad because since by trials of last week on this track, my car is always very quick. I was feeling good and without the incident, I could have climbed further to the front. But it’s behind and I am confident for tomorrow’s last race. Since I will be further back on the grid, I will have to manage my race differently. But since I now have a very good knowledge of the track and a car well prepared by my team, it should be a good race’’, concluded the Canadian who, as driver of car number 35 will be on track around 5:55 pm local time (11:55 am ET).
Since for this race on the grid reverse positions are given to the top ten finishers of the first race, Laliberté will occupy the 9th position and the young Schumacher, the 10th.
