Bowmanville, Ontario – Elmvale, Ontario’s Matt Garwood overcame a temperamental car this past weekend at the opening round of the Miller Oils Formula 1200 Championship to bring home two 3rd place finishes and a 5th place finish.
On Saturday Garwood took to the track for Race #1 of the Formula 1200 Championship tripleheader as part of the BEMC Spring Trophy Races at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. Starting from 5th on the grid Garwood got a solid start and worked his way up to 3rd. An intermittent power drop caused the 19 year old driver to fall back to 5th. Using every inch of the track and the draft Garwood would cross the line in 3rd, giving him his first podium of the weekend and the 2015 season.
Garwood’s results from Race 1 allowed him to start from 3rd on the grid for the second race of the weekend. Ongoing issues with inconsistent power continued to pester Garwood but he fought to stay with the leaders throughout the race and even achieved the 3rd fastest lap. Once again he ended up on the third step of podium for all his hard work.
In the third and final Formula 1200 race of the weekend Garwood started from 3rd on the grid. Again an intermittent power issue caused him trouble as well as being caught behind a slower car. Even out of the draft Garwood still managed stay in contact with the leaders running some of his best single car laps around Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. Garwood would cross the start/finish line in 5th.
“I’m thrilled to get two podiums in as many races this weekend! Starting from third in the second race I had hoped to challenge for the lead. I had the best start of my career and I made a pass for 2nd going in to turn 1 and ran 2nd for while. Overall it was a good weekend and earned some solid points towards the championship.” said Garwood
Garwood is proud to represent; FEL (Franczak Enterprises Ltd.) Vallis Motor Sport, Core Evolution Fitness, Athletes Brand and Autoglym Canada and is also proud to be "Laps for Muscular Dystrophy" (Laps4MD) driver where he has pledged to donate $1 for every lap he leads to Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
