Thorold, Ontario – SMS Machine Tools Night blasted the 2014 Season into summer with a Lucas Oil Weekly Racing Series Event that featured Round 2 of the Tri Track Series for the Rick's Delivery Sportsman in addition to a TUSA Modified Lite Tour Event for the J&S Heating and Air Conditioning Modified Lites June 21st.
Brad Rouse and Paul Klager took home the wins in those two events while Mat Williamson, Jason Fontaine and Rothwell also visited Victory Lane in the Bobcat of Hamilton 358 Modifieds, Hoosier Stocks and Turn 4 Collision 4 Cylinders respectively.
"I made the pass on the bottom," said Rouse of St. Catharines in Victory Lane for the first time of the season in the 30 lap finale, "to the finish ... I just tried to use the lap cars to my advantage."
Just prior to ironically a lap 28 caution, Gary Lindberg had the He's Not Here Bar # 28 right there pulling to Rouse's rear bumper – setting up a two lap dash to the checkered flag after Brent Begolo slowed off the pace.
Lindberg took the lead from initial leader Austin Wood early on and by lap 5 had pulled away to about a ¼ lap lead on the field. The race to watch was the one for second between Justin Sharp and Rouse until a lap 9 caution slowed the field.
Lindberg set the pace on the restart but with Rouse challenging – there was no clear leader with the two in quite a battle.
By lap 15, Lindberg had the advantage until two laps later when lap cars would become a factor. Down the backstretch of lap 17 Rouse was now in control and through increasing lap traffic was able to pull away slightly.
With 10 laps to go, Lindberg narrowed the gap running around the outside and closed to within a bumper until the lap 28 caution.
In the 2 lap dash to the finish, Rouse was able to hold a couple car length lead over Lindberg with Sharp holding on for third. James Michael Friesen and Cody McPherson rounded out the top 5.
Rick's Delivery Sportsman Division Heat Winners – James Michael Friesen, Austin Wood and Justin Sharp.
Hingston Metal Fabricators Night Saturday July 26th will feature the 2nd Tri Track Series Sportsman Event at Merrittville.
"We finally have this new car figured out," revealed Paul Klager of Beamsville after his 2nd win of the season and 2nd in TUSA Canada West Mod Lite Tour Tripleheader Weekend, "I didn't want to see all those cautions though for the all the fans with us tonight!"
After making a last lap move to win the weekend opener at Ohsweken Speedway June 20th – Saturday Night's event had Klager in control from start to finish in the 20 lap event.
7 cautions would slow the field including several in the early stages after sophomore 4th generation driver Dylan Davidson slowed. Davidson miraculously was able to start the feature after flipping his car in his heat as did rookie Rob Misener.
In the first half, Derek Wagner who Klager got by for the win Friday was able to stay with the leader. Klager was able to pull away from the field until a lap 11 caution with Josh Sliter in the runner up spot on the restart.
With Klager running away to almost a straightaway lead – the race to watch was the one between team-mates Jamie Gilbert and Sliter. Lap 17 unfortunately had Gilbert losing control of his car slowing the pace one last time.
With Klager again out front – the race to watch was again for second with Wagner edging Sliter at the finish. Jeff May and Jason Darocha rounded out the top 5.
J&S Heating and Air Conditioning Modified Lite Heat Winners - Jim Bogett and Paul Klager.
The TUSA Canada West Mod Lite Tour concludes June 22nd at Humberstone Speedway with a second tripleheader at the same tracks August 22nd to 24th.
"Ryan's great to race with ... I knew I had to slide him to win it," said Mat Williamson in Bobcat of Hamilton 358 Modified Victory Lane for the 2nd time in 2014, "we've put in lots of travel this week and lots of laps ... this one's for my crew and family!"
Williamson, of St. Catharines competed with his Big Block Modified in a Super DIRTcar Series Event at New Egypt Speedway (New Jersey) and his Friday Night stop at Pennsylvania's Lernerville Speedway was in quite a race with second generation driver Ryan Susice around the halfway point of the 35 lap Feature.
Travis Miller – the rookie second generation driver was the initial leader and had Susice to contend with early. Susice took the lead on lap 2 until a lap 10 caution.
Miller would regain the lead on the restart but unfortunately would be put back two spots on the next restart or at the finish whichever came first after firing before the leader.
Just before a lap 20 caution, Williamson had begun to close on Susice. Williamson would become the new leader and by lap 25 was off to a ¼ lap lead.
Lap traffic in the final 5 laps wouldn't slow Williamson with Susice settling for second and Tim Jones third. Chad Brachmann and Mike Bowman closed out the top 5.
Bobcat of Hamilton 358 Modified Heat Winners were Williamson, Scott Wood and Miller.
"Thanks to Adam and Bruce Ferri for letting me use their shop all week," said 6 time 2014 Hoosier Stock Feature Winner Jason Fontaine, "this one's for my mom and dad who are here for the first time of the season."
Chris Crawford was first to lead the 20 lap Feature with defending champion Kevin Knapp the first to challenge after a lap 2 caution.
Quickly Fontaine would make the battle for top spot three wide with the Port Colborne driver taking the lead out of Turn 4 to complete lap 4. A lap 8 caution would slow the field took away about a 5 car length lead for Fontaine.
When action resumed with Fontaine out front – the race to watch seemed to be for who would finish behind the leader. Billy Bleich quickly took over third spot with Crawford taking it back on lap 12.
A lap 13 caution saw Fontaine back in control but also saw Billy Hogue in third. The lap 2 caution had involved Hogue as well as Jim Lampman and Rob Murray who all rallied back to round out the top 5 behind Fontaine and Knapp.
Hoosier Stock Heat Winners were Crawford and Fontaine.
"We talked before our race ... he told me let's have some fun tonight!" said first time 2014 Feature Winner Kyle Rothwell of his challenge from Evan Curtis, "hands down this has to be the worst start in my short racing career. I've broken just about everything you could break on my car and others ... I finally have my number ... so hopefully it's all in the past."
Rothwell of Port Colborne who has raced 6 different cars in 2014 took the lead from early leader Jocelyn Wiley on lap 8.
By lap 10, Curtis was a couple car lengths behind the leader with the two about a ¼ lap ahead of Leroy Buscumb.
Curtis made a last lap challenge for the lead with Rothwell holding on by a half a car length.
Rothwell and Curtis were followed by Buscumb, Rob Overholt and Wiley.
Turn 4 Collision 4 Cylinder Division Heat Winners were Overholt, Chris Shepherd and Curtis.
