Cory Turner scored his first top 5 Spring Car finish at Humberstone Speedway.
FRIDAY, JUNE 13
Superstitions proved untrue last week as drivers in Ohsweken Speedway's 360 Sprint Car division had a mostly uneventful night, despite a full moon on Friday the 13th. The field of 22 Sprint Cars ran 3 heat races, a B-Main, and A-Feature without a single caution flag.
Cory and Jamie both had to run the B-Main, as they finished 8th and 6th in their heat races, respectively. Jamie won the B-Main, with Cory finishing 3rd, so both advanced to the feature race. Cory started 18th and finished 16th in the A-Feature, while Jamie advanced from 16th to 12th.
Jamie is now 12th in the Ohsweken championship standings, while Cory is 15th and leads the Rookie of the Year standings.
SATURDAY, JUNE 14
Ryan's race weekend began on Saturday night at Merrittville Speedway, where he started 3rd in his heat race and went on to win it. He started 5th, but suffered a flat left rear tire on the second lap. The team was able to get the tire changed and Ryan drove through the pack to salvage a 13th place finish, and keep his 13th spot in the Merrittville DIRTcar Sportsman Modified championship standings.
While Ryan was racing at Merrittville, Cory and Jamie were at the Brighton Speedway for the third round of the Southern Ontario Sprints tour season.
Cory was forced to start at the rear of the field in both his heat race and the A-Feature due to SOS rules regarding rookie drivers. He started 7th in his heat race and finished 4th, and then started 19th in the A-Feature. He moved through the field quickly, but got off track in turns three and four and lost several spots. He was able to make up some of that ground, and eventually finished 10th - a career best to that point in his first Sprint Car season.
Jamie started 5th in his heat race and finished 5th, qualifying for the 12th starting spot in the A-Feature. He was able to make up some spots, and came home with a solid 7th place finish.
SUNDAY, JUNE 15
Team Turner reunited at Humberstone Speedway on Sunday night, where Cory and Jamie competed in round four of the SOS season, and Ryan was back in his DIRTcar Sportsman Modified.
Cory's time starting at the back of all SOS races finished after his third race with the club on Saturday night, and he had some good luck in drawing the pole position for his heat race on Sunday. He was able to finish 2nd in that race, and qualify for the redraw for A-Feature starting positions. Cory drew the 5th starting spot for the A-Feature, and stayed in the top 5 for the whole race.
"On a lap 17 restart I was running 4th and my ear buds had pulled out of my radio," Cory explains. "I was unaware that I needed to let a lap car start in front of me before the restart, and I ended up being docked 2 positions. I crossed the line in 3rd, but was ultimately scored 5th, which is still my first top five (in a Sprint Car) and my best run to date."
Jamie started and finished 4th in his heat race, and started 12th in the A-Feature again. This time he was able to advance to finish 6th in the A-Feature.
Cory's finishes over the weekend have moved him to 7th in the SOS championship standings, while Jamie is now 5th.
Ryan started and finished 4th in his heat race, which qualified him to start 10th in the A-Feature. He was able to advance and finish 7th in the A-Feature, and maintain a solid spot in the championship and rookie of the year standings.
The three TTR drivers combined for a total of 8 feature races on the weekend, and brought home five Top 10 finishes. Team Turner Racing wants to send out a big thanks to all their crew, supporters, and marketing partners for making it all possible to have such a successful weekend! They'll look for even better results as both Cory and Ryan gain more experience in their rookie seasons.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Jamie and Cory will be back in action with their 360 Sprint Cars this Friday, June 20 when the Patriot Sprint Tour visits Ohsweken Speedway to take on the track's Corr/Pak Merchandising 360 Sprint Car teams. They're also excited to welcome teammate Havard Daniels from New Zealand back to the track.
Ryan's rookie season in the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified division continues with a Sportsman Tri-Track Series event on Saturday, June 21 at Merrittville Speedway, and weekly racing on Sunday, June 22 at Humberstone Speedway.
Cory's #19 Sprint Car will be on display at KT Gas & Convenience on Hwy 54 near Ohsweken this Saturday, June 21.
