Trenton, Ontario – Charlie Sandercock’s impressive 2017 season continued this week with a dominating performance in Brighton Speedway’s 50th anniversary nostalgia night. Sandercock started on the pole of the 50-lap Pro Late Model Feature and led every lap for his fifth Brighton win of the season.

Sandercock started the night with a second-place time trial effort in his heat group and was also finished second in his Heat Race.

“We were a little bit too tight for Time Trials,” Sandercock said. “The track had a little bit more tack in it than we thought it was going to have. We were able to still make it second-fastest overall in Time Trials. In the Heat Race, the track was more or less a one groove racetrack around the bottom. I tried the outside a couple of times, but I wasn’t really making anything work.”

The special event night saw a redraw for the top-six finishers and Sandercock pulled the number one starting spot. When the green flag dropped, Sandercock was flawless and raced to the win 4.4 seconds ahead of second-place runner Brandon Mowat.

“We didn’t have to venture very far off the bottom,” Sandercock said of his effort. “We had some lapped traffic and went to the outside to make a couple of passes, but there was lots of traction on the bottom, so we kind of left it there.”

Sandercock was running a special throwback paint scheme for the night. The left side of the car was designed like Huck Flindall’s former No.57, a former racer and announcer at Brighton, and the right-side of the car was a tribute to Sandercock’s uncle Lee, who also ran No.57.

“I was completely honoured to be able to run the old school 57s on my 57 car for the weekend,” Sandercock said. “Those two guys seeing the car for the first time and being in awe was worth every penny. It was definitely really rewarding to win that with a throwback to my uncle Lee and Huck. It meant a lot to those guys to put it in Victory Lane and I’m glad I was able to do that for them.”

The night was also a chance for drivers and the Brighton Speedway community to reminisce about the track’s history. Built in 1967 by Lou Reddom, the track has since been run by two generations of the Rinaldi family and is currently under the direction of Mark and Angie Rinaldi.

“It’s definitely fantastic to hear the history of the track and the creation of what the track is now,” Sandercock said. “Everyone’s done their fair share of building that place and as of late, Mark and Angie Rinaldi have done an amazing job at bringing new and better shows.”

Sandercock’s victory at the nostalgic night continued an impressive streak at the Northumberland County one-third mile oval. The Trenton, Ont. native has not finished worse than second at Brighton in Pro Late Model competition since April 29 when he finished fifth. The 57 Racing Team is certainly rolling along.

“We’ve always had a fairly decent setup and this year everything’s clicked, everything’s worked well,” Sandercock explained. “We changed a few things in our program and it’s been working well. It’s nothing major, just a few small things, but all those small things have to add up to make everything go around. Everything seems to be adding up right now.”

Sandercock will look to continue his streak of success when he returns to action at Brighton Speedway on Saturday, July 22 for the Summer Smash featuring Monster Trucks. For additional event information, visit www.brightonspeedway.ca.
