Ohsweken, Ontario – 125 drivers signed in to race in the 22nd Ohsweken Speedway Season Opener presented by Ackland Insurance on Friday. Alex Hill, Ryan Hunsinger, Dave Bailey, Jon Janssens, and Lucas Smith visited Lucas Oil Victory Lane.

KOOL KIDZ-CORR/PAK 360 SPRINT CARS (19 entries)
Alex Hill and 2016 champion Mitch Brown started on the front row for the A-Main. Brown jumped out to the early advantage and pulled away from the field. On lap four however a broken torque tube bolt caused the rear end to snap, ending the night for the Brantford driver and handing the lead over to Hill.
On the restart Hill along with teammates Glenn Styres and Dylan Westbrook held down the top three positions. The three raced nose to tail and separated themselves from the rest of the field until lap 11 when Styres made a challenge for the lead in turn three. He held the lead momentarily, but Hill was able to drive back by Styres off of corner four and distanced herself the following lap. On lap 14 Styres over drove the third corner allowing Westbrook and Jake Brown to slip by.
The win was the first in a 360 Sprint Car for Alex Hill. Westbrook and Brown completed the top three. Heat race wins went to Mitch Brown, Glenn Styres and Dylan Westbrook while Dylan Westbrook also won the Ackland Insurance Top Gun Award.

STRICKLAND’S GMC CRATE SPRINT CARS (27 entries)
With a record number of Crate Sprint Cars in attendance, defending champion Jesse McDonald started on the pole for the A-Main. McDonald immediately took the lead over Mike Thorne and Shone Evans. Thorne challenged the leader multiple times using the high line, however on a lap 7 restart an attempt to pass low was foiled by Ryan Hunsinger and he gave up the runner up position.
Hunsinger wasn’t done from there as he began to reel in McDonald and by lap 14 had caught and passed him. ‘The Gunslinger’ held on for his second straight opening night win and third in the four year history of the division. McDonald finished second and Evans crossed the line third.
Heat race wins went to Jesse Costa, Jesse McDonald and Connor Mahoney. McDonald would also claim the Ackland Insurance Top Gun Award.

ACKLAND INSURANCE “TOP GUN” AWARD ($100): Jesse McDonald
MIDDLEPORT MECHANICAL THUNDER STOCKS (25 entries)
2016 champion Dave Bailey led the field to the green flag and would take the early lead over outside pole sitter Chris Dickie in the opening lap of Thunder Stock main event. Third place starter Karl Sault quickly moved his way into the runner up spot and chased Bailey for the first 7 laps. Ryan Dinning included himself in the fight for the lead, but cut a tire while challenging for the top spot. Meanwhile, Sault was able pass Bailey on the outside and take the lead on lap 8.
Sault looked to be well on his way to the win until he tangled with a lapped car while coming out of corner four to take the two laps to go signal. The race remained green and Bailey would slip by to take the lead and the win. Veteran Jim Lampman finished second while newcomer Shawn Chenoweth claimed an impressive third.

HRW AUTOMOTIVE MINI STOCKS (35 entries)
Mark Bazuin and Jon Janssens led the first Mini Stock feature of the season to green and would not stay far apart for the entire 15 lap affair. Bazuin held the lead for the first 11 laps, however Janssens ran a smooth and methodical race and worked by the leader with just 4 laps to go. Bazuin challenged in the closing circuits, but was not able to get back by and would finish second. Gary Hodgson finished a career high third.
Heat race wins went to Doug Erskine, Jonathan Ayrton and Nick Masi.

GALE’S AUTO AFTERMARKET BOMBERS (19 entries)
Lucas Smith and 2016 champion Dustin Longboat started on the front row in the first Bomber feature of the season. The two separated themselves from the field early and Smith led every lap on the way to his first career win. Longboat finished a distant second while Adam Halbert fought off the challenges of Jerry Burnham for third.

About Ohsweken Speedway: Founded in 1996, Ohsweken Speedway is a motorsports complex which includes a 3/8 (0.375) mile clay oval track. The facility is owned by the Styres family, and located in the village of Ohsweken, Ontario, Canada. Ohsweken’s weekly Friday night racing program runs from May to September each year, featuring 360 Sprint Cars, Crate Sprint Cars, Thunder Stocks, Mini Stocks, and Bombers, while the season finishes each year with the annual Canadian Sprint Car Nationals.
