Brighton, Ontario – It may be his sophomore season, but Jonah Mutton has looked like a veteran in Brighton Automotive Pro Stock competition this season. The Brighton native earned his second win of the season and a second-place finish during the Ultramar Labour Day Classic weekend and has earned the Campbellford Chrysler Driver of the Week as a result.

Mutton earned his first career win in the division back on July 9 before holding off championship point leader Justin Ramsay and multi-time champion Doug Anderson on Sunday night. He drove from the 10th starting spot to take the lead on lap five and pulled away to a convincing straightaway lead until a caution on lap 16. Mutton had to hold off Anderson on a restart and then Ramsay for the win over the final three laps.

“I didn’t actually know how big of a lead I had until the caution came out and it took a minute before I saw anybody,” Mutton said. “We really didn’t want to see that last caution, but we managed to hang on to it. To outrun Doug, Justin and Brandon (Murrell) was cool.”

Mutton was not only happy to win, but to receive Anderson and Ramsay’s congratulations following the race solidified the special moment.

“To have the sportsmanship after the race where both of them came up and shake our hands – Doug actually dumped a bottle of water over me – to be in good spirits with everybody is definitely quite cool,” Mutton said with a laugh.

Before Mutton got his first win in July he was the bridesmaid a number of times. A handful of top-five finishes preceded his first win, but it didn’t hinder his effort and spirit.

“It’s not frustrating because any time you can make it to the top-five is a good night. The on-going joke was that we had the curse of lap 17. It seemed like I could make it to the front in a hurry and I could lead all the way to lap 17,” Mutton laughed.

“The last two or three laps we would be running well, but all of a sudden you would see the nose of somebody a little bit better. It drove us to work harder, dig deeper.”

Mutton got over the hump mid-season and has continued with his consistent pace ever since. He’s tried to perfect the setup on the car and has finally found something that works well. It’s allowed him to achieve some of the goals he posted prior to the year.

“We definitely wanted to try and win a feature this year. That was the big one so to pull it off twice is awesome,” Mutton said. “We were hoping to be in the top-five in points and it would mean we were having a great year to be in the top-three. We’re pretty close to the goal.”

Mutton sits just 60 points behind Brandon Murrell going in to the final points night on September 23 and a top-three is certainly still a possibility.

“If we could pull that off, it would cap off a pretty good year for us and give us some momentum to work through the winter,” Mutton explained. “Hopefully next year we can compete for a championship.”

Mutton will enjoy the remainder of his 2016 season with hopes of earning a third win. A new car may be in the work for next season which will help the driver of the No.39 work towards his long-term goal.

“I really do enjoy the Pro Stocks. We can race at a couple of different tracks,” Mutton said. “Ideally I think two to three more years in Pro Stock and ultimately I would like to end up running a modified.”

Jonah Mutton’s 2016 season is supported by Noco Fuels, Apex Graphics, Apex Auto, Mayhew Auto, The Lunch Box and DE Racing.
