Brighton, Ontario – The first night of the 2016 Ultramar Labour Day Classic Weekend presented by Lucas Oil, Rock 107 and Mystical Distributing saw a busy pit area, full grandstand and packed campground at Brighton Speedway. A total 85 cars signed in for competition as the Southern Ontario Sprints headlined the show with a 25-lap main event on their fifth visit to Brighton this season.
Westbrook Wins Third Straight Brighton Start With SOS
Dylan Westbrook (No.47x Bradshaw Fuels) is quickly becoming the Sprint Car king at Brighton Speedway. The Oakland, Ont. teenager won his third straight Southern Ontario Sprints series race at Brighton Speedway on Saturday night. The 360 Sprint Car rookie started outside the front row with the ‘Joyceville Jet’ Rick Wilson (No.42w Draper Doors) on the pole.
Wilson paced the first four circuits until the only caution of the race slowed the field in turn four after Charlie Sandercock (No.57 Bellevue Fabricating) spun in turn four. Westbrook made his move on the single-file restart, throwing a slidejob at Wilson in turn one to take the lead off turn two. Wilson tried to return the favour at the other end of the track, but hopped the cushion in turn four and Westbrook held the lead.
At the halfway point, Westbrook had pulled away to a full straightaway lead over Wilson, but it began to evaporate over the final 10 laps as Westbrook struggled through two-wide lapped traffic. The lead was reduced to five car lengths on the final lap, enough for Westbrook to hold on for his fifth SOS win this season. Wilson finished in second ahead of Warren Mahoney (No.25 RBM Carriers), Sandercock and Steve Lyons (No.9 Creative Edge).
Curtis King Wins Second Canadian Modified Feature
Wooler’s Curtis King (No.07 Flowmetrix) started on the pole for the 25-lap Bainer’s OilGARD Canadian Modified feature and led every lap to earn the win. The race was slow to start with four cautions in the opening three laps before the final 22 laps ran without incident.
Josh Hennessy (No.88 A&A Haulage) challenged King early in the outside lane, but was overtaken by Picton’s Kraig Handley (No.91 Tri-Canadian Energy) for second on lap eight. Dan Ferguson (No.11 Kilmarnock Enterprise) relegated Hennessy to fourth on the same lap.
King maintained a consistent three car-length gap over Handley until Ferguson took the runner-up spot on lap 14. Ferguson followed King around the bottom of the racetrack, as the No.07 raced without error to secure the victory. Andrew Hennessy (No.87 RJ Equipment) used a last lap pass to claim third over Handley and Doug O’Blenis (No.32 John’s Car Care).
Ramsay Tops Pro Stocks For Seventh Win
The ‘Rossmore Rocket’ Justin Ramsay (No.03 Empey Tire) drove to victory lane for the seventh time this season in Brighton Automotive Pro Stock action. The win initially appeared like it would happen in convincing fashion after he started outside row two, but was never able to pull away from the top three.
Ramsay led the first lap after Art Rogers (No.38 Wilson Engines) and Chris Dorland (No.14 Performance Sales) led the field to the green flag. Doug Anderson jumped from sixth to second by lap two to challenge Ramsay. The two raced nose-to-tail until they restarted side-by-side on lap seven following a caution for an expired motor on Brian Cross’ Sobey’s sponsored No.08.
Jonah Mutton made his presence felt following the restart and stuck with the top two drivers in a three-car breakaway. Mutton raced passed Anderson for second on lap 12. He chased Ramsay the final eight laps, but Ramsay was able to pull away in lapped traffic to complete the win.
French Scores Comp 4 Win
Tyler French (No.0 Empey Tire) returned to victory lane in the 15-lap main event for the Bill’s Johns Comp 4. Polesitter Adam Flieler (No.11 Double D Sports Bar) led the opening two laps before rookie Matthew Moore (No.14 Farl’s Auto Body) took the point on the third lap. French raced to second on the same lap and the two drivers broke away from the rest of the field. At the halfway point, French took the lead from Moore in turn four and then danced away to claim his sixth win of the season. Moore held on to second while Luke Toms (No.19 Diamond Detailing) won a battle for third over Peter Moore (No.17 Sherry’s Pet Grooming). Nick Hamer (No.44) was fifth.
MacDonald and Bulten Earn Stinger Wins
Mark MacDonald (No.28 Cannifton Garage) started outside the front row for the Quinte Septic Super Stinger feature and used the track position to his advantage from the drop of the green flag. MacDonald led the opening lap while Jorden Pickell (No.93 Sowerby Signs) raced in to second on lap two. The only caution of the race came on lap seven for debris and MacDonald held off a challenge from Pickell and Del MacGregor (No.19 R Ward Construction) over the final five laps to secure his second win of the season.
In Junior Stinger action, Willy Bulten (No.50) raced from the eighth starting position to his third win of the season. Tony Reid (No.4) led the field to the green flag and paced the opening two laps before the first caution of the race. Bulten used the restart to take the lead and ran away from fellow rookie Brock Gregory (No.1 Like Nu Driveway Sealing) to earn his division-leading third feature win. Brittany Golden (No.85 Rapid Rad) was third after a last lap pass to take the final podium spot.
