After a frustrating weekend to open their swing through western Canada DJ Kennington and the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team bounced back with a sixth place finish in round number seven of the NASCAR Pinty’s series at Wyant Group Raceway in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on Wednesday.
Kennington had the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge near the top of the time sheets throughout the afternoon practice sessions and clicked a very fast lap during qualifying and secured the fourth starting spot. “It was a good lap and we were on top for a while, but I felt really good heading into the race.
When the 250-lap feature event began the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge was up to second position even before lap five. “There were a couple of opportunities early to gain some spots so we took advantage” said Kennington.
The 1/3-mile oval has progressive banking that allows drivers tor race side by side. However there were some that tried to go even further as Kennington found himself three wide heading into the bumpy turn one in the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge. “We got pushed high and bounced around pretty good,” said the driver.
The #17 Castrol Edge Dodge would fall back a few positions but that wasn’t the most serious issue. “I’m pretty sure the toe was knocked out,” surmised Kennington. “The car got pretty loose as the night went on as well” he added.
During a scheduled mid-race break for fuel and fresh tires the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team also made some handling adjustments to try and help their driver. “With the bruising we took we just couldn’t do enough to get the car back where it was” stated Kennington.
Using all his talents Kennington would bring the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge home with a sixth place finish, his sixth top ten result in seven events. “We got what we could tonight,” he stated. “With what we had to work with it’s not bad so we’ll take it and be ready to go again in a couple of weeks” he added.
DJ Kennington and the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team return to action August 14th at the Grand Prix of Trois-Rivieres.
