Thorold, Ontario – Although small in stature, Trevor Wright has big goals set for his racing that one day he might like to have as his career.
Turning 14 in February, the Beamsville Teen is looking forward to taking his racing up a level after purchasing the former Austin Wood #38 to join the Sportsman Division in 2016.
“I really love a challenge,” said Trevor of his ambitious plans, “I believe to really grow as a person and as a driver … I need to leave my comfort zone.”
“It’s been in the works for a few years,” informed Trevor’s dad Rob Wright, “we thought about using a Modified Lite as a stepping stone to Sportsman but when this deal came around we went with it. I always want to move forward … it’s always good to be with better racers.”
Wright who is part owner of Central Fabricating is a former racer himself, having competed in the former Mod Stock Division as well as in Street Stocks. His former number 90 has been with Trevor since his start in Kart Racing in 2011 although reversed as the second generation driver will campaign his #09 BRP Chassis in a limited schedule this season – focused on a full rookie season in 2017.
“We’re waiting to see how the proposed Novice Sportsman Division plans unfold,” added Wright, “if it comes about we’ll make as many nights as we can … if not we’ll only run 6 races.”
Wright also has plans of continuing on with his Kart Racing although somewhat of a lesser schedule than 2015 which saw him competing weekly Tuesday Nights at Merrittville, Thursday Nights at Ransomville while following the New York Dirt Kart Series. His season finished up with a second in his second start at Little E – the Kart Track on the grounds of Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio.
Trevor’s 2015 Kart Season saw third place finishes in the Junior Restricted Points at Merrittville as well as in the NYDKS Blue Plate Division also being named most improved NYDKS Junior Driver – taking home a Bicknell Racing Products Slack Karts Fast Time Award from the Can Am Series Stop.
At Ransomville, some disappointing finishes led to a 6th place finish in the points.
One of the challenges the Wrights are facing even before taking to the track is fitting Trevor into the new car.
“We’ve looked at 3 different seat manufacturers,” said Trevor’s dad, “we are also working on installing the pedals and the dash panel so he can reach everything.”
The Wrights are looking forward to learning about their Sportsman at the upcoming Bicknell Racing Products Open House and are registered for the Pete Bicknell Driving School in April.
For all their helping with his Karting, the Wrights would like to thank Josh Philpott and Select Cut Tires and Eric Vause.
Many of Trevor’s sponsors are following the move from his Kart to the Sportsman including Central Fabricating, Designed Wright, Harmony Jewellers, Bickles Hardware, R.A.G. Rentals, Ericway Tire, Jerry's Auto Body, Fulton Steel, All-Source Heat Treating, Steeles Landscaping
Joining the team this season are Walter’s Excavating, Laurcoat Powdercoating, Wade Combustion, Action Automotive, Wentworth Metals, RH Electric and Alexander Awnings. The car will be fitted with a new body just after the BRP Open House with the Team hoping to welcome other new sponsors before the start of the season.
Trevor’s 16 year old sister Emily has had to watch her brother’s 2015 Season from quite a distance as she has been in Sweden on the Rotary Youth Exchange Program – returning midsummer.
Rob may have some Sportsman experience to fall back on as back in the day, he helped James Michael Friesen for a stretch. It was then that JMF gave Trevor a nickname ‘Destroyer’ after watching the youngster go at some beer cans with a hammer.
Away from racing, Trevor and his Dad like to squeeze in a little fishing, ATVing and with the recent arrival of winter, may get out on the snowmobile. Many of the family’s holidays surround their love of racing – whether it be attending NASCAR Sprint Cup and DIRTcar Events not to mention Karting.
Trevor also enjoys his Xbox and Wii games however a New Year’s Day mishap that flooded their basement has him waiting for replacements.
After a trip to Homestead for the NASCAR Season Finale, their camper was left at a storage facility to be picked up during March Break. Little did Trevor know that during this trip – he would be racing his kart in the Carolinas. The only pieces of the puzzle yet to be solved – how to get the Kart Trailer down south and which race to enter.
“I’ve got to thank my Dad for all the long hours he puts in and for always doing what needs to be done,” said Trevor after finding out about his first Kart Race of 2016, “that was a nice surprise for sure … and thanks to my Mom Heather for all the Kart Tires she’s washed and all of her support!”
