October 10 2015
Caistor Centre, Ontario – Team Turner Racing finished their 2015 racing season at the 11th annual Canadian Sprint Car Nationals by celebrating another team first.
SEPTEMBER 17 - CSCN TEST & TUNE
Jamie and sons Cory and Ryan all turned some laps in the Test & Tune at Ohsweken on Thursday. The track was very tacky, with many drivers turning the fastest laps of the season.
"We had a great night at test and tune," Cory noted. "We worked on some new setups on a very fast race track!"
SEPTEMBER 18 - NIGHT BEFORE THE NATIONALS
52 cars were signed in for the Night Before the Nationals at Ohsweken on Friday. The event included Twin 15 lap features for the 360 Sprint Cars, plus the Kevin Ward Jr. Young Stars Challenge, and Dave McLeod Memorial Shootout.
"I started pole in my heat and didn't get a great start (and) wound up finishing 4th, which was still good enough to transfer to the A-Main in the split field event," Cory said. "In the feature I started 10th, wasn't able to make up much ground, and wound up finishing 9th.
"My dad started 3rd in a very tough heat, and was also able to finish 3rd. He pulled off early (in the feature) after experiencing some minor mechanical issues.
"My brother started 4th and had a good heat race going until he had a spark plug wire come off. On a fast, hammer-down race track it made a huge difference, and he was unable to finish in a qualifying spot."
Jamie and Cory both qualified for the Dave McLeod Memorial Shootout with their 1-2 finish at Ohsweken on August 28. Jamie finished 10th in the de facto all-star race, while Cory pulled off the track early in the 12 lap event.
SEPTEMBER 19 - CANADIAN SPRINT CAR NATIONALS
Jamie, Cory, and Ryan were among the 65 drivers who attempted qualification for Saturday's Canadian Sprint Car Nationals. Tricky conditions challenged the competitors, as the track crew dealt with some curveballs from Mother Nature.
"We were greeted by some rain showers when we arrived at the race track," Cory recalled. "Our crew had done a great job to get our cars through tech early, on what was to be a very busy day and night."
Time trials, 6 Heat Races, 3 B-Features, and the "Little Feature" were used to determine the 30 car starting lineup for the 35 lap, $12,000-to-win A-Feature. Jamie, Cory, and Ryan were all trying to put a Team Turner car into the A-Feature for the first time.
"None of us were overly impressed with our speed in time trials, as we all missed the inversion in our respective heat races," Cory said. "My Dad missed it by one spot, I missed it by two, and my brother missed it by a few."
Cory and Jamie both started 7th in their respective heat races, while Ryan started 9th in his. Transferring from the heat races was a tall task, as only 3 of the 11 starters moved directly to the A-Feature.
"After falling back early, I was able to make up a lot of positions near the end of the race once the track started to slick out," Cory noted. "I wound up finishing 5th, which put me in good shape for the B-Main.
"My dad did not advance, as he had the car far too loose and ended up finishing 10th. His finish in the heat race definitely hindered his ability to make the A-Main, as he would have to start near the tail of the B-Main. My brother made forward progress in the heat race as he started 9th and was able to finish 7th."
The B-Features were tough as well, with 16 cars starting each of them, and only 2 transferring to the A-Feature. Finishing 3rd-7th in a B-Feature, however, meant a trip to the Little Feature and one last shot at qualifying.
"I started 4th and had the transfer spot in my sights the entire race, but made a couple of driver errors and wound up finishing 3rd," Cory admitted. "My dad and brother both got caught up in a cluster in the start of their races, and were unable to make it to the Little Feature which unfortunately ended their nights."
The 15 lap Little Feature was the last chance to qualify for the A-Feature, with 5 transfer spots available.
"I was lucky enough to start outside pole in the Little Feature (but) fell back to 3rd after the first few laps," Cory explained. "Early in the race I knew I had a great car, but didn't want to push the issue as all I had to do was finish inside the top 5. Late in the race I used the bottom line to my advantage, and I was able to get the lead with a few laps to go and pick up the win! It was definitely a nice surprise, as I didn't think we were going to win the race - I was just concerned about making the A Main!"
The Little Feature win earned Cory the 26th starting position in the A-Feature, and the team's first CSCN A-Feature starting spot in 6 years of trying.
"After a lap one caution the race went straight through and we were able to finish 17th and stay on the lead lap!" Cory exclaimed. "I was really happy with the car, and had we been able to transfer through the heat race and have a better starting spot in the A-Main, I think we could have finished in the top 10!"
The CSCN weekend officially finished the team's season, with the 3 drivers combining for 2 A-Feature wins, 16 top fives, and 53 top tens in 2015.
"This was definitely an exclamation point on a great year," Cory said. "My brother was able to finish top ten in both Ohsweken and SOS points, as well as being crowned Rookie of the Year in both divisions.
"My dad was top ten in both SOS and Ohsweken points, and he also picked up his first Sprint Car win.
"I was lucky enough to finish top 5 in both Ohsweken and SOS points, pick up my first Sprint Car win, and qualify for my first Canadian Sprint Car Nationals.
"This is a huge testament to our marketing partners, crew, and supporters. We are already in the early stages of planning for 2016, and look to come back bigger and stronger than before!"
