Caistor Centre, Ontario – Team Turner Racing finished up their "regular season" last Friday in the Southern Ontario Sprints tour finale at Merrittville Speedway. Now Jamie Turner and sons Cory and Ryan are ready to defend home turf, and take on some of the best 360 Sprint Car teams in North America in this weekend's Canadian Sprint Car Nationals at Ohsweken Speedway.

SEPTEMBER 11 - MERRITTVILLE

"We made the short trek down to the Merrittville Speedway on Friday night," Cory said of the half-hour trip from Caistor Centre to Thorold, where Turners have been racing since the 1960's. "Very different than (Ohsweken), our normal Friday night venue. It threatened rain all night, making it very questionable if we were even going to get the show in. Somehow they managed to get it in!"

All 3 Team Turner drivers gained a position in their heat races, and all 3 qualified for the redraw for A-Feature starting positions.

"I think it was the first time all season that all 3 of us were able to make the redraw on the same night!" Cory exclaimed.

Ryan's experience racing in the DIRT Sportsman class weekly at Merrittville last season helped him to stay near the front and secure a good finish.

"During the feature it spit rain for much of the race," Cory noted. "My brother was able to start pole, and run inside the top 3 for much of the race until finishing 4th. He had a great run at a track that he has many laps on, and he was definitely pretty happy with his performance!"

Cory's race didn't turn out quite as well, but he was still able to record a solid finish.

"I set my car up too tight, as the track didn't slick out near as much as I thought it would," Cory said. "Some of that can be attributed to the spitting rain, but I definitely misjudged the track and it never slicked out. I started 6th and ran inside the top 10 all race, and was able to bring the car home in 8th."

It looked as if the team would again record a trio of top 10 finishes, as they had in April at Merrittville, but Jamie's race came to a grinding halt on lap 17.

"My dad started 7th," Cory began, "...and also ran inside the top 10 all race, until - with 7 or 8 laps to go - he got a right rear from another racer in the left side of his car. He hopped the other racer's wheel, leaving him with a badly damaged car, and he was unable to finish the race. It wasn't the way he was looking to finish his SOS season, but overall we all had a great year!"

UP NEXT

"This week we are planning on running Friday night and Saturday at the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals," Cory said. "We have never put a car in the A-Main on Saturday, but (we) and our crew have been in the shop every night this week trying to break this trend - Hopefully this is the year! This will be our last racing weekend of the year, so hopefully we can cap off an already great season with one more highlight."
