Nelson Mason scored his best finish of the season, a 10th in race 2 at Spa.
TEAMCMS DDi driver Nelson Mason had arguably his best weekend yet in the GP3 series in Spa-Francorchamps at the Belgium Grand Prix with a 15th place finish in Race1 and 10th place finish in Race2.
As usual at Spa the conditions were ever changing over the weekend including both races being a wet/dry affair with 27 drivers lined up for Round 6 of the 2014 GP3 Series.
Nelson had a time good enough for P16 during a shortened free practice and qualified P19 during damp and drizzling conditions. Race1 started with some competitors on slicks while others choosing rain tires to start the race, Nelson decided to start with rain tires which proved to be an interesting decision as he rocketed from his 19th position on the starting grid to 3rd position by lap one!
Nelson eventually settled in to 4th position and was able to stay there for a few laps before entering the pits for slicks on a drying track. Nelson re-entered the race in 20th position and began his charge up the field, eventually finishing in 15th position in a crash filled chaotic wet/dry race.
Race2 began on Sunday morning with Nelson beginning where he left off Race1 in 15th position, the track again moist but drying with all cars on slick tires. Nelson had a strong run in Race2 and was one of the fastest cars for much of the race at one point setting fastest race lap, ultimately finishing in 10th position, his best result this season-obviously gaining confidence with every on track session.
Next up for TEAMCMS DDi driver Nelson Mason is September 5-7 at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, a track he is again familiar with and looking forward to competing on.
Nelson Mason: We had two strong races this weekend in tricky conditions with damp track conditions, fastest car for much of the Race2 and a strong finish to P10, conditions were tricky- a perfect Spa race. We are getting there-bring on Monza!!!
